Applicants are invited to apply for a studentship on an aspect of Jewish culture and/or Jewish art that relates to the First World War, its impact, memory or legacies. The proposed project should be situated in the areas of the arts, cultural and social history and/or memory studies and offer new insights into the experience and understanding of World War One from a Jewish perspective. International and comparative proposals as well as locally or regionally specific projects will be considered. Applicants can also propose a practice-led research project; respective protocols for the Faculty of Arts/Faculty of Performance, Visual Arts and Communications (PVAC) can be found at: http://www.leeds.ac.uk/rsa/graduate_board/protocols.html.

The studentship consists of a UK/EU fees bursary over three years and an annual maintenance grant of £ 10,000. It is offered by the Centre for Jewish Studies in conjunction with the University of Leeds Legacies of War Centenary Project and is funded by the Montague Burton Endowment.

As well as carrying out doctoral research, the successful candidate is expected to contribute to the development and coordination of academic and community engagement activities that will be organised by Legacies of War and cultural partners (including Jewish organisations) during the Centenary years 2014-2018. The candidate will have opportunities to present his/her research findings in the context of these activities.

The MSt is a two-year, part-time University of Cambridge degree, offered by the CJCR in conjunction with the Faculty of Divinity and the Institute of Continuing Education. It offers you a unique opportunity to familiarize yourself in depth with Jewish-Christian relations from a variety of disciplinary perspectives (including history, sociology, political, cultural, and biblical studies) and acquire a Master’s degree from one of the world’s foremost universities.

The course is available residentially in Cambridge or via e-learning. You may choose to spend part (or all) of your second year working on your dissertation at one of the Austrian, Czech, German, Polish or Swiss universities with whom we have Erasmus agreements. If you are thinking of pursuing a relevant PhD after the MSt, the Faculty of Divinity may recognize the MSt as the first year of study towards your doctorate.

To be admitted to the MSt, you will need a good first degree in an Arts and Humanities or Social Sciences discipline.

For further information please go to: http://www.woolf.cam.ac.uk/courses/mst.asp

The CJCR can currently offer up to two studentships covering tuition fees for both years (for UK/EU or international students) and a number of bursaries covering part of the tuition fees for entrants wishing to pursue the MSt beginning in the autumn of 2012.

The Leo Baeck Institute in conjunction with the School of History, Queen Mary, University of London is offering two bursaries tenable for the academic year 2012-2013 for students taking the Leo Baeck Institute MA in European Jewish History. The bursary will cover the fee at the Home/EU rate (the rate for 2012-13 is £5,500). Candidates should normally have attained or expect to attain a first class degree or equivalent in history or a related humanities subject.

The Programme

The Leo Baeck Institute MA trains scholars towards undertaking independent research on Jewish history, culture and thought in Europe. It provides a strong grounding in approaches and theories which have influenced the ways in which scholars understand Jewish history. Simultaneously, the MA introduces students to a wide range of sources available for European Jewish studies. Particular attention will be paid to the Jewish response to modernity and problems around the definition and issues of assimilation and identity. The role of antisemitism and the origins of the Holocaust are central, as is Jewish intellectual history, focusing on the ideas of eminent Jewish thinkers about the place of Jews and Judaism in pre-modern and modern society.

The MA consists of the core module, three modules chosen from a series of options and an individually supervised dissertation. Students will also take a non-assessed research methods course. Part-time students take the core module and one option in the first year, and two options and dissertation in the second year.

Optional modules may include:

Modern Jewish History and Culture

Christians and Jews in Europe: Perceptions and Encounters, 1100-1600

Jews, Power and Intellectual History

Antisemitism and the Holocaust

Modern European Jewish Literature

Hollywood and the Second World War

Understanding Religion Historically

Overcoming Nazism

The Leo Baeck Institute

The Leo Baeck Institute (LBI) is the leading research institute in the field of the history and culture of German-speaking Jewry in Europe from the 17th Century onwards. It was founded in 1955 and named after Leo Baeck, the last public representative of the Jewish Community in Nazi Germany. Among the Institute’s publications are the Leo Baeck Institute Year Book and the Schriftenreihe wissenschaftlicher Abhandlungen. The institute organises a broad range of events such as lecture series and international conferences, and has recently established two research professorships to investigate the role of German-speaking Jews in 19th and 20th century academia.

The School of History at Queen Mary

The School of History at Queen Mary is one of the largest history departments in London and offers a very wide range of degree courses and research opportunities.

It provides first-rate teaching fuelled by cutting-edge research within a friendly, welcoming atmosphere with an emphasis on student support. RAE 2008 has ranked Queen Mary among the top 15 research universities in the UK. The School of History, having entered all of its academic staff performed very well with nearly a third of our research rated as ‘world leading’ and nearly two-thirds as ‘internationally excellent’ or better.

General Entry Requirements

An upper second class honours undergraduate degree or higher in History (or overseas equivalent). Mature students from other academic backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
